Getting an HND is a great way to start your journey of building a successful career. Taught at Levels 4 and 5, HNDs are the perfect way to research and learn more about your chosen area while acquiring invaluable practical skills.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
At Levels 4 and 5, HNDs are higher education credentials with a vocational focus. An HND is equal to the second year of a three-year degree. Ideal for those who prefer to learn while doing, an HND is a qualification that provides a quicker and more direct route into professions than a full bachelor’s degree. These vocational courses take two years to complete if studied full-time – or four years part-time.
With a top-up degree, you can meet the requirements for a full bachelor’s degree in just one extra year of study. The HNDs will boost employment possibilities in business, healthcare practice, and digital technologies.
HND courses are eligible for funding from Student Finance England – if this is your first higher education qualification. In 2021/22, you can claim up to £9,250 a year in England towards your course costs.

As HND courses focus on the hands-on skills needed for specific careers, employers will highly value you. Typically, students secure employment in civil engineering, business and finance, allied health and management roles, among other fields.
