Dr James Alder, Head of Programming (Sports) at Regent College London.

In April 2026, Regent College London’s (RCL) School of Health and Sports Science (SoHSS) welcomed Dr James Alder as its new Head of Programming (Sport).

A British Army veteran, Chartered Psychologist specialising in Sport and Exercise, and experienced rugby coach, Dr Alder brings a unique blend of academic expertise and real-world experience to the role. His teaching approach combines research-informed practice with practical application, helping students connect theory with the realities of sport, wellbeing and performance.

Alongside his work at RCL, Dr Alder hosts the podcast Trauma, Training & Transformation, which explores how sport, exercise and psychology can support recovery, rebuild confidence and transform lives following trauma.

A story of recovery, resilience and transformation

After serving 26 years in the British Army, including a tour in Iraq, Dr Alder was medically discharged in 2015 following a diagnosis of PTSD. Transitioning away from military life proved challenging, and he became increasingly aware of the limited support available to many former service personnel navigating similar experiences.

During this period, exercise – particularly CrossFit – became an important outlet, providing structure, community and a renewed sense of purpose. Inspired by the positive impact that sport and physical activity had on his own wellbeing, Dr Alder launched Trauma, Training & Transformation in late 2025 to create open conversations around mental health, recovery and resilience.

Now approaching 40 episodes, the podcast features powerful stories from former Olympic wrestlers, fitness coaches, rugby players, coaches and officials, all sharing personal experiences of adversity, growth and transformation through sport and exercise.

Dr Alder was recently featured by CBC Nova Scotia, where he discussed his remarkable journey and the mission behind the podcast to challenge stigma and highlight the role exercise can play in supporting mental health and wellbeing. Read the full article
