We all know the traditional route is to take a 3-4 year Bachelor’s, while that may be the case for many, for other students, they opt to take different routes. One way of achieving the full Bachelor’s Level 6 Qualification is by taking an FdSc Degree, otherwise known as a Foundation Degree. What is a Foundation Degree?

A foundation degree is the academic equivalent of two-thirds of a Bachelors degree or a Higher National Diploma (HND). A Foundation Degree is a two-year stand-alone qualification in its own right. After completing this you can go to the final year of degree as well or complete a Top-up and gain a degree. This qualification is equivalent to two-thirds of a Bachelor’s degree, and a Higher National Diploma (HND): Level 4 and 5. A Top-up Degree will then provide you with a Level 6 Qualification.

What’s the difference between a Foundation Degree and a Foundation Year with Degree?

This can get pretty confusing for some students as they both sound very similar. However, they are totally different degree types and the duration of the degrees highly differ. A Foundation Year with Degree, is an extra year of learning and gaining new skills and knowledge before moving onto a BSc or BA. If you pass the foundation year, it’s almost, very likely you will move onto the 1st or 2nd Year of a Bachelor’s (Hons) Degree. However, Foundation Degree is a two-year stand-alone qualification in its own right. After completing this you can go to the final year of degree as well or complete Top-up and get a degree.

Once completing both the FdSc and Top-up Degrees, you will have then gained a full Bachelors Degree. Alternatively, you can go on to study the final year of a Bachelors Degree.

Can you do a masters with a foundation degree?

Once you have gained a Level 6 Qualification, you will be able to go on and study a Master’s Degree. A Foundation Degree is a great stepping stone to help you on your way to study for an MSc Degree.

How is a foundation degree graded?

If you choose to take the FdSc Business Management Degree at Regent College London, our assessment tasks are linked to the learning outcomes of each module and are completed before the end of the module. Module assessments are typically either coursework or examination or a combination of both. Other types of assessment may include in-class tests, coursework assignments, presentations, projects.

What qualifications do i need to do a foundation degree?

The following are the Entry Requirements for the FdSc Business Management Degree:

  • You should have a minimum of one GCE A2-level pass (or equivalent), including any subject and five GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent), including English.
  • If English is not your first language you will need to complete a Secure English Language Test at IELTS 5.5 or equivalent..
  • You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.

They are £9,250 per year.
