Assessment

Assessments are by coursework and examination with the majority of modules being assessed by coursework only. A group assignment will be used to assess the ability of students to develop options and evaluate them, making reference to prior analysis. The assessment method is used to develop and assess critical analysis to evaluate the options available to organisations. The assignment will also require the students to recommend and justify an appropriate strategy/course of action based on their analysis. Group report, 3,000 words. The examination (EX1) will assess student knowledge of theory and concepts and their critical analysis/reasoning ability. 2 hour exam.

Overview

The Business Management Top-up has been specifically designed to give you the knowledge and practical understanding employers look for in today’s ever changing business climate. You will explore key topics including leadership, innovation, marketing and change – vital concepts in the rapidly transforming world of business in any industry.

Whether your ambition is to take on a senior leadership role in a large organisation, or to drive forward the success of your own business, this Top-up Degree will build on your previous studies in business and take understanding to the next level. Through practical application and business-focused assessments, you will be equipped to thrive within the business environment.

The BA (Hons) Business Management (Top-up) is a progression route from a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business or a business related course to gain a full degree awarded by Buckinghamshire New University, our validation partner.

Who is the Top-up Degree in Business Management Course For?

This one year course is particularly aimed at those who wish to develop critical, analytical, creative and reflective approaches to business. The Business Management Top-up is suitable for those who already have a broad business-related HND, foundation degree or equivalent. Regent College London offer flexible timetables to help you fit your studies around your busy life. Our campuses run Weekend, Weekday and Evening study options.

Modules

Students study four modules which carry 30 credits each:

Strategic Marketing (MG624) – 30 credits

  • Theories and models of strategic marketing and how these have been developed in relation to external PESTEL elements
  • The role of technology in this process and in particular the use and development of digital technology in the strategic marketing process
  • How to carry out a marketing audit
  • How to critically assess the results of the audit both by data analysis and in terms of theories and models
  • The process of developing a marketing plan with particular reference to factors as setting ROI and KPI targets
  • How to implement and manage the plan both internally and externally
  • How to critically evaluate the plan against ROI and KPI targets
  • How to utilise this evaluation for future business planning

Managing Innovation in Business (BM627) – 30 credits

  • Macro and micro environment analysis and the key drivers of innovation
  • Secondary research skills using appropriate resources
  • Primary research skills for business analysis and auditing including internal consultancy skills
  • Approaches to innovation and the use of customer centred innovation mapping
  • The value chain and innovation
  • Innovation designs vs. economic realities and organisational culture issues
  • Implementing innovation factors for success and failure
  • Leadership styles and work group realities for successful innovation in businesses
  • Competence, behaviour and attitudes of learning
  • Leaders and Organisational Development including the effects of politics and power
  • The assessment strategy is based on two assessments where the students will submit individual written reports.

Leading and Managing Change (MG625) – 30 credits

  • What is Change Management and why is it so critical in organisations?
  • Managing change and the role of the leader
  • The context of organisational change
  • Critical theories and approaches to change management
  • Planned and unplanned change
  • Organisation Development approaches
  • Resistance to change
  • Globalisation and the challenge of change. The assessment strategy is based on two assessments where the students will submit individual written reports.

Corporate Strategy and Governance (BM628) – 30 credits

  • How can your board prepare itself for the inevitable unexpected events and crises that it may face, such as activist takeovers, accounting fraud, and environmental disasters?
  • What steps should you take to ensure your company complies with relevant regulations and laws?
  • What are your board’s responsibility and role in relation to management?
  • How do organisations expand into different markets and the different modes of entries they could use
  • How organisations could gain competitive advantage through organisational capabilities
  • Understanding industry evolution and strategic change at board level.
  • What are the VUCA, {volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity}, factors influencing the business that the board could potentially face?
  • How to develop and evaluate corporate strategies?
  • How to search and evaluate academic information and critically review available literature A group assignment will be used to assess the ability of students to develop options and evaluate them, making reference to prior analysis.
  • How to research into complex organisational issues using different methods like interviews and questionnaires for primary data collection.
  • There will be one formative assessment, and one summative assessment. The formative assessment will be as follows: A proposal comprising of 1,000 words to include a brief introduction of the issue or problem in corporate governance or strategy in a specific organisation to be researched
  • Feedback from the formative assignment, will prepare students for the summative assessment. A full individual report of 6000 words will be required to include an action plan and recommendations to the management within the organisation of their choice as to the best way of solving such problems.

Entry Requirements

  • Level 5 with a good level of business topics is required: 1. A pass in an HND 2. A foundation degree 3. A recognised UK degree or overseas equivalent
  • Evidence of English proficiency (Upper B2). If you have studied an English HND for two years, your completion of the HND meets this requirement.
  • You will also need to attend an academic interview at which you will need to show a good conceptual understanding of business and study expectations at Level 6.

How will the course be delivered?

Read

For the September intake the course will initially be delivered digitally via Regent Digital. The delivery of the course will then move to our campuses for the traditional engagement, subject to the viability of groups and future guidance on social distancing. Regent College London cannot guarantee the campus choice.

If there are not enough students enrolled at a particular campus, the course will be delivered digitally via Regent Digital with the teaching happening at another location, but streamed at the campus.
