6 tips to make working from home work for you

6 tips to make working from home work for you

If you’re used to working in an office, the transition to working from home can be a shock to the system. Without the regular routine of a commute and an office environment, unhealthy habits can creep in, you can feel isolated from your colleagues, and your personal drive can suffer.

Here are six tips to not just stay on top of remote working but make it work for you.

1. Create a dedicated workspace

It’s important to have a designated area in your home that is just for work. This will help you stay focused and avoid distractions.  If you don’t have an extra room, try setting up a space in your living room or bedroom. Invest in some good equipment – having a comfortable chair, and a good desk will make a big difference in your productivity. You might also want to invest in a second monitor if you find yourself working on a lot of different things at once.

2. Set regular hours

When you’re working from home, it can be tempting to just work all the time. But it’s important to set regular hours and take breaks throughout the day.  This will help you avoid burnout and stay fresh. Try leaving the house every morning, taking a short walk and then returning to start your day at your desk. The shift in the environment will help set you up.

3. Stay connected

One of the challenges of working from home is feeling isolated from your colleagues. Make sure to schedule regular check-ins with your team and take advantage of available video conferencing tools to stay connected. If you feel isolated, why not try an ambient sound app or background radio.

4. Set personal goals

It can be helpful to set daily or weekly goals to keep yourself on track. This will help you measure your progress and feel a sense of accomplishment. It’s important to be your own mentor when working remotely and push yourself to achieve more.  Consider online training or even a flexible degree course. You’d be amazed at how flexible universities can be these days. They now allow you to study on-demand with pre-recorded lecture material you can work into your busy day.

5. Take breaks

Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you should work all the time. Make sure to take breaks throughout the day and try to get outside for a walk or some fresh air when you can.

6. End-of-day routine

When you’re done with work for the day, it’s important to have a set routine that signals to your brain that it’s time to relax. This could involve something as simple as taking a few minutes to tidy up your workspace before calling it a day.

Following these simple tips will help you make the most of working from home while staying on top of things and pushing yourself to advance through online study options. With a little bit of effort, you’ll be able to create a productive and enjoyable work-from-home experience that works for you.
